Baytown Mother Signs up to Participate in the Cleft Smiles 5k in Memory of Son
Michelle Hutchison is a 46 year old mother from Baytown, TX, who has registered for her first 5k, to honor the memory of her son, who born with a cleft lip and palate. Michelle’s son, Christopher Newman, was born in March 1987. In addition to the cleft lip and palate, he was also born with three holes in his heart. Christopher underwent many surgeries throughout his life, including open heart surgery at three months of age, followed by lip and palate repairs.
Christopher passed away in December 2010, at age 23. Michelle’s faith was shattered and the grief of her loss took a toll on all aspects of her life, including her health. Following an eye-opening doctor’s visit last year, Michelle has begun to make her health and wellness a priority. Since then, she has lost 30 pounds, and gained new dreams and hope for the future.
She is looking forward to the Cleft Smiles 5k Family Fun Run/Walk as a way to celebrate both her weight loss success and Christopher’s life.
“I am very thankful and honored to share my personal connection to the Cleft Lip community,” says Michelle. “I want to support this organization because I lived through the experiences of bottle feeding and many nights in the hospital.” Michelle recalls the struggles that families of cleft-affected children face, including feeding issues, hospital visits, and speech therapy. However, through it all, she says “Christopher was blessed with many friends that stood up and fought for him and protected him.”
