Canadian Woman Joins Cleft Smiles 5k
Shalon MacLellan set a goal to get healthy in 2015, and has begun training for the Cleft Smiles 5k, which will be her first 5k!
Shalon was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a partial cleft palate. She has had surgery twice to repair her palate, but continues to struggle with inner ear and dental issues that have required additional surgery over the years.
“Surgery, dental work and treatment for Cleft Palate patients are financially covered by Canada’s health care system, so I was very fortunate to have that kind of support all my life,” says Shalon.
Shalon has overcome the many challenges that she faced early in life, and now works as a Geomatics Specialist in the oil and gas industry in Houston, where she has lived for nearly three years. In addition to the Cleft Smiles 5k this March, Shalon is also looking forward to a visit from her grandparents, who raised her after her parents’ tragic death when she was three. “This will be an exciting year for me, and an exciting challenge to work towards the 5k run.”
