Asmussen Family Joins Cleft Smiles 5k
Laura and Mark Asmussen and their children, Kolbe (7), Rudy (6), Grant (3) and Tommy (4 months) have signed up to participate in the Cleft Smiles 5k this March in The Woodlands, Texas.
The family has been personally affected by cleft issues, as their first child, Kolbe, was born with a cleft lip and palate. As first-time parents, Laura and Mark were grateful to find support in their community to help them get through this difficult time. “We were so blessed to receive the love and support of our community in Lubbock,” says Laura. Kolbe received treatment at Shriners Hospital in Houston, and was sponsored by the local Shriners group to undergo his surgeries free of charge to the family. Today, Kolbe is thriving, and the Asmussen family is ready to pay it forward. “Since then, life has changed and we are now fortunate enough to be able to give back to the cleft community. We love helping cleft causes and donating to cleft organizations whenever possible,” says Laura.
On March 7, Mark, Kolbe, and Rudy will hit the trail as runners; Mark completed his first half marathon in 2013, and Kolbe ran his first road race last Thanksgiving. Laura and the younger kids plan to take on the Cleft Smiles 5k at a more leisurely pace.
