Share Your Smile: Sueoka Family Sets Goals for Fitness, Charity
“Helping others smile makes us happy!” say Ben and Kate Sueoka of Beaumont, Texas. They have signed up to do just that at the Cleft Smiles 5k, an event benefitting Operation Smile, an organization that provides free cleft surgeries to children in some of the poorest areas of the world— healing smiles, bringing hope for a better future, and saving children’s lives.
Ben, an Interventional Radiologist at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas, and Kate, a nurse and high school teacher, are avid runners. The couple is currently training for the 5k event at the National Senior Games this summer in Minneapolis. Kate also writes a blog, Up and Running, which focuses on running and fitness after age 50.
Ben and Kate, proud grandparents of three, see Cleft Smiles 5k as not just a way to train for their competition in July, but also as a way to help others. “We have had our share of challenges,” says Kate, “and life has taught me that no matter what happens, the most important thing you can do is to keep smiling.”
