Houston 6th Grader Raises $2000 for Cleft Surgeries
“Give a smile, change a life.” That was the mission adopted by Daniela Contreras, a Houston 6th grader who set out last year to make her mark on the world. The 12-year-old has raised over $2,000 in the past two years for Cleft Smiles 5k and Operation Smile.
Daniela, the youngest of four siblings, was born with a cleft lip. Today, she is active in sports and ballet and acts as as advocate for the cleft community.
Last year, for the inaugural Cleft Smiles 5k, Daniela raised $325. This year, she has raised close to $2,000– a sum that will change the lives of at least five cleft-affected children around the world.
Daniela heard about Cleft Smiles 5k during a checkup with Dr. Teichgraeber at the Texas Cleft-Craniofacial Clinic. “I was fortunate enough to arrive in a family that could afford my treatment,” says Daniela. “One of my purposes in life is to help underprivileged kids suffering from cleft lip and palate.”
“Daniela’s accomplishments are incredible,” says Race Director Leah Yeglin. “She’s a champion for the cleft community and she has certainly accomplished her goal to change lives.”
